Their reporting successfully freed over 2,000 slaves and inspired reforms in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Labor abuse is an ongoing problem, McDowell said. Many people are on the side of the business and it is a common joke, she said, adding that this is why they decided to make people care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo often in the case, it\u2019s not when governments put pressure on businesses, it\u2019s not when human right activists put pressure on groups, it\u2019s when consumers say \u2018we are not going to buy this anymore\u2019, and that\u2019s when we start seeing change,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Production is done piece by piece in different parts of the world, so that people often fail to know what they are buying is from sweatshop or a slave, she said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ppww.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/06-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Robin McDowell listens questions carefully in Q&amp;A part,in Hong Kong Baptist University,Monday 24 October 2016.(Photo\/Mathilda)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ppww.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/06-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ppww.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/06-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ppww.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/06-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She used the shoe industry as an example. \u201cBecause the industry was divided into such tiny little pieces, maybe someone is making the shoelace, and that is the problem story,\u201d she said.
